The Howell Theater, known to the locals as “The Howell”, is a historic gem. This small movie theater has been a Smithfield favorite since 1935! What makes this little theater so special is its old fashioned feel-it only has 4 screens and boasts original hardwood floors throughout. Admission is always inexpensive, leaving room in the budget for popcorn and snacks!


The Ava Gardner Museum

Ava Gardner was a highly popular movie actress in the 1940s and 50s. She was born in a rural community seven miles south of Smithfield. She rose to fame at the young age of 18, and is known for her multiple marriages to high-profile stars such as Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra. The museum is a special tribute to the gorgeous film star-showcasing unique costumes, rare movie posters, and Ava’s personal belongings. Stop by the gift shop for a souvenir!


The Buffalo Creek Greenway

The Buffalo Creek Greenway, better known as the Neuse Riverwalk, is a 2.9 mile waterway trail located in the heart of Downtown Smithfield. This trail is a gorgeous hike, featuring stunning views of the Neuse River and local wildlife. The trail also includes fishing areas and a large boat ramp!
